Abortion: In the Majority, but Not Popular

Published on 05/19/09

According to the latest Gallup poll, presented by www.usatoday.com, says that 51% of Americans believe that Abortion is wrong. While 42% said they are “pro-choice”. Just last year 50% were pro-choice and 44% were pro life.

This leads us to the biggest question of all. If most Americans believe that abortion is wrong, then why is abortion legal?

President Obama, through controversy, spoke that the University of Notre Dame the other day. The controversy being that President Obama is pro-abortion while the Catholic based school is adamantly pro life. President Obama in his speech said, “maybe we won’t agree on abortion…we can agree that this heart rensing decision isn’t made casually, it has both moral and spiritual dimensions…let’s work together to reduce unintended pregnancy.”

He is quoted a while back as saying that “no one is pro abortion”, yet he will support Roe vs. Wade wholeheartedly.

I think that this is exactly what happens in America. While people would generally feel that abortion is wrong, they still support even more the women’s right to choose. This type of thinking could be where these numbers come from. Most people aren’t pro abortion, i.e. they don’t want to see it happen. But they are definitely pro abortion, i.e. giving the woman the right to choose.

So how should us Christians be thinking about this biblically.

Psalm 139:15-16 – “My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes say my substance, being yet unformed...”

What a powerful statement! God knows us even before we are formed. God also knows that amount of days, (Ps. 139:16) hours, or minutes we will be alive. God creates and forms each human being.

I just heard a statement made by a caller on the Albert Mohler Radio program saying, “If abortion is not murder…because it’s just a group of molecules and whatnot…then why is having an abortion such a great moral and difficult decision?”

The reason abortion is such a difficult decision is because every woman knows in their heart of hearts that they are carrying a child.

Let us be compassionate and loving as we discuss this topic. Let us treasure life…at all levels.
